The Orchard at the
End of the Lane.

By Eleanor Vale · A fictional book created for this demonstration.

Why we chose it

Some journeys
bring us back.

When a letter brings Clara back to the village she left twenty years ago, she expects a few difficult conversations and a quick departure. The orchard has other ideas.

At the edge of the lane, the trees her grandfather planted are still bearing fruit. The neighbours remember a version of her she has almost forgotten. And a handwritten notebook, tucked into a kitchen drawer, suggests that the family story was never quite as simple as she believed.

This imagined novel gives our example club plenty to discuss: belonging, memory, quiet acts of kindness and whether returning to a place means returning to the person you used to be.

The title, author, synopsis and discussion questions are original fictional placeholder content. This is not a published-book recommendation.

Around the table

What does the orchard represent?

Think about how a place can carry different meanings for different generations. What might Clara notice that her grandfather did not?

Can you return without going backwards?

Discuss the difference between coming home and trying to recreate a past life. What would a fresh start look like in a familiar place?

Who gets to tell a family’s story?

Consider the notebook, the neighbours and Clara’s own memories. Which perspective would you want to hear more of?
